Fr. Francis Chirackal, CMI
Parochial Vicar
I am one of ten children born to Chummar Chirackal and Eliamma Chummar Chirackal. My parents, who are very devoted, traditional Catholics, migrated Kerala, India (a southern state) to Karnataka (a neighboring state).
I am the fifth oldest of my siblings. One of my younger sisters passed to her eternal reward at an early age. Two of my three older sisters have seven and four children, respectively. Among them, four of my nieces are nuns in CMC, a Carmelite Religious Congregation. One of my younger brothers is also a CMI priest.
I attended school to the 12th grade at N.R. Pura in my hometown of Chikkamagalore County in Karnataka, finishing in 1980. Along with school education, I completed my Catechism up to 10th grade at little Flower Church, which is our Parish. In 1980, I joined the Seminary of the CMI Congregation at Mysore. After my novitiate in Kerala, I completed a Bachelor Degree in Philosophy (B.Ph.) at Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram (DVK), a CMI Major seminary in Bangalore. After B.Ph. completed a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology, Sociology, and Kannada Literature at the University of Bangalore. Completed my Theological studies at DVK, I was ordained to the priesthood on December 26, 1992.
After my ordination, I spent six years at the new mission centre at Arakalgud, Hassan County in Karnataka State. In addition to providing pastoral and social services, I founded a school for the local children. At present there are more than 500 children enrolled up to the 10th grade. During my time at Arakalgud, I assisted with rural organization, health and hygiene, literacy programs, education development programs, and children and women development programs.
In 1999, I went to study at Mangalore University. I completed a Masters Degree in Social Work (MSW) in 2001. My superiors then appointed me to the mission centre at Kandali, Hassan, Karnataka for pastoral and social services. I was involved in pastoral services, rural organization and rural health programs. In 2002, I went to Japan and learned acupuncture to help the rural people. By the help of God, I designed a machine to manufacture acupuncture needles (ICN - Intra Cutaneous Needles) and it helped me to serve the people at Christa Jayanthi Hospital, Kandali, run by the CMI congregation. Along with pastoral ministry, God enabled me to be involved in various social service activities such as the promotion of rural organizations, literacy programs, promotion of alternative medicines, skill and capacity building training, children and women development programs, and communal harmony programs. I also served for two and a half years as the President of the county level Child Welfare Committee. This committee is appointed by the State government to help children who need special care and protection under the Indian Juvenile Justice Act. I was also a member of the Genetic Counseling Committee under the Indian Pre-Natal Diagnostics Technique Act.
God enabled me to reach St. Mary’s Parish on April 4, 2006. I am very thankful to Bishop Wiegand for appointing me as Parochial Vicar of St. Mary’s. It is a very good parish and I am very happy here with this loving and cooperating community of believers. I continue to enjoy getting to know each of you in a spirit of cooperation and sharing with Supernatural motive.
